Older dogs often need a gentler recipe than an adult food provides, and a fish-based diet is a common choice where a vet has flagged joint support or a milder protein source as worth trying - which is the gap James Wellbeloved's senior fish recipe is built for.

Brown rice leads the recipe at 34.1%, with fish meal at 16%, barley, white rice at 15.1%, whole linseed, fish stock at 3.8%, peas, olive oil and fish oil at 1.5%. Small named additions include nettles and parsley, each at 0.125%, and glucosamine at 0.045%. Protein comes out at 19.5%, fat at 9.5%, crude ash at 6.5% and crude fibre at 3.5%, with omega-3 at 1.3% and vitamin E at 350mg/kg. It is a complete food.

• Fish-based: fish meal 16%, fish stock 3.8%, fish oil 1.5%
• Protein 19.5%, fat 9.5%, crude ash 6.5%, crude fibre 3.5%
• Omega-3 at 1.3%, glucosamine at 0.045%
• Brown rice as the lead carbohydrate at 34.1%
• Formulated for senior dogs
• 15kg bag

On the protein level. At 19.5%, protein here is lower than James Wellbeloved's adult recipes, which fits a senior formulation aimed at older dogs generally, but it is worth checking with a vet if your dog has a specific reason - working weight, illness recovery - to need more or less protein than a standard senior diet provides.

Who it's for: owners of a senior dog for whom a fish-based, lower-protein recipe has been recommended, or who simply want a gentler formulation than a standard adult food as their dog ages.
