Iams puppy food

Iams is a long-established pet food brand, and its puppy range is formulated around the different growth rates and needs of small, medium and large breed puppies rather than one size-fits-all recipe. We stock the Small & Medium Breed formula, built around lamb as the named protein for growing dogs who will mature at a moderate adult size.

Why breed size matters for a puppy food

A puppy's nutritional needs during growth differ noticeably by the size they will reach as an adult — a large or giant breed puppy grows much faster relative to their eventual size than a small breed puppy does, and feeding a large-breed-calibrated food to a small dog, or vice versa, can mean the calorie density and calcium levels are not matched to how that dog is actually growing. This is why Iams, like most established puppy ranges, splits its formulas by breed size rather than selling one universal puppy food.

The Small & Medium Breed formula is built for dogs expected to reach a moderate adult weight, with kibble sized appropriately for smaller mouths, which matters in practice — a large kibble meant for a mastiff puppy is genuinely harder for a small terrier puppy to manage.

What we stock

Our current Iams line is the Puppy Small & Medium Breed Lamb recipe, a complete dry food for growing puppies of breeds expected to reach a moderate adult size. We stock a selection from the wider Iams range rather than the whole brand catalogue, so check the specific formula matches your puppy's expected adult size before buying.

As with any puppy food, introduce it gradually if switching from a different brand, over several days rather than all at once, and speak to your vet about the right amount to feed as your puppy grows rather than guessing from the bag alone.

Common questions

Is Iams a good brand for puppies?
Iams is a well-established brand with formulas split by breed size, which is a sensible approach given how differently large and small breed puppies grow. Whether a specific recipe suits your puppy comes down to their expected adult size and any individual sensitivities, the same as with any brand.
Do I need a different puppy food for a small breed?
It is worth choosing a formula matched to your puppy's expected adult size where one is available, since small and large breed puppies grow at different rates and have different calorie and calcium needs during that growth. A Small & Medium Breed formula is built with that in mind.
How do I switch my puppy to Iams from another food?
Introduce it gradually over several days, mixing increasing amounts of the new food in with the old rather than swapping overnight. Watch your puppy's stools and appetite during the switch, and slow the transition down further if they seem unsettled.
