What single protein actually buys you

That's different from a hydrolysed or prescription diet, where the protein has been broken down into pieces too small for the immune system to recognise at all. Iams doesn't make one of those. Once a dog or cat has an actual diagnosed allergy rather than a general sensitivity, a hydrolysed diet from a vet is usually the next step, not another shop-bought single-protein food.
The one recipe built for digestion, not allergy
Iams Adult Cat Sensitive Digestion Turkey is the one product in the range aimed squarely at a sensitive gut rather than a skin or coat problem. It uses a single named protein and is formulated to be gentler on digestion, which is usually the first thing worth trying for a cat with intermittently soft stools or a history of not settling well on richer food.
There isn't a dog recipe under that exact billing in the current range, so a dog with digestive rather than skin symptoms is generally better served starting with one of the single-protein dry foods above, introduced gradually alongside whatever is currently being fed rather than swapped over in one sitting.
How to choose
Start with a protein your dog or cat hasn't eaten much of before, since a reaction is more likely to something the immune system has already met repeatedly than to something genuinely new. Chicken turns up in most pets' diets already, so lamb or ocean fish is often the more useful starting point if you're trying to rule something out.
Introduce any change over a week or so, adding a little more of the new food each day, and keep a note of what changed and when. If symptoms haven't settled after a proper single-protein trial, that's worth taking to your vet rather than working through the rest of the range alone.

Iams' own range instead offers several single-protein recipes, which is the usual starting point for investigating a suspected sensitivity before a hydrolysed diet is ever considered.
- What's the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity?
- A true allergy is an immune reaction to a specific ingredient and is genuinely uncommon in dogs and cats. A sensitivity, or intolerance, is far more common and usually shows up as soft stools, wind or itchy skin without the immune system being involved in the same way, and it often settles with a simpler, single-protein diet.
- How long does a diet trial take to show results?
- Vets often suggest allowing six to eight weeks for a genuine single-protein trial before judging it, since skin and digestive symptoms can take that long to fully settle even once the trigger is removed. Switching foods again before that point makes it much harder to tell what actually helped.
- Can I mix flavours while trialling a single protein?
