Baskerville dog muzzles
Baskerville is the muzzle range we carry the most of — basket-style designs that let a dog pant, drink and take a treat through the front, rather than the tight fabric type that clamps the mouth shut. We stock several fits, from the Classic through to the Wide Fit and the softer Invisa design.
The different fits
The Classic Basket Muzzle is the standard shape most people picture, built from lightweight plastic with an adjustable strap. The Wide Fit is cut roomier around the nose for breeds with a broader muzzle, and the Ultra is a step up in build for dogs that pull hard against a muzzle or need something more secure.
The Invisa is a lighter, more open design that looks less imposing than the classic basket shape, which some owners prefer for a dog that only needs a muzzle occasionally rather than one with a serious behavioural reason for wearing it daily.
Getting the fit right
A muzzle that's the wrong size is worse than no muzzle at all — too tight and a dog can't pant properly, too loose and it can be pawed off or a dog can still nip through the gaps. Basket-style muzzles are usually sized by snout length and girth rather than by breed or weight alone.
Because sizing varies between the different Baskerville styles, it's worth measuring your dog against the specific fit you're ordering rather than assuming a size that worked in one design carries over to another.
Who wears a basket muzzle
Basket muzzles are used for far more than aggression — vet visits, grooming, recovery from surgery, muzzle training as a precaution, or simply because some public spaces and transport require one for certain breeds.
Because a dog can still drink, pant and take treats through the basket, it's the type most trainers recommend for anything beyond a very short-term restraint, including the muzzle training many owners now do as routine good practice rather than a response to a problem.

Common questions
- Can a dog drink water while wearing a Baskerville muzzle?
- Yes, that's the point of the basket design — the open front lets a dog pant and drink normally, unlike a fabric muzzle that holds the jaws shut. It's one of the main reasons basket muzzles are preferred for anything longer than a very brief use.
- How do I measure my dog for a basket muzzle?
- You'll generally need the length of the snout from the eyes to the tip of the nose, and the girth measured around the widest part of the muzzle. Check the specific size guide on the product listing, since it varies between the Classic, Wide Fit and Ultra styles.
- Is a basket muzzle cruel?
- No, a well-fitted basket muzzle lets a dog pant, drink, bark and take treats, which a tight fabric muzzle does not. Vets and trainers commonly recommend them for travel, grooming, vet visits and muzzle training rather than only for aggressive dogs.
- How long can a dog safely wear a basket muzzle?
- Longer than a fabric muzzle, because a dog can pant and regulate their temperature normally through it, but it still shouldn't be left on unsupervised for extended periods. If you're unsure what's appropriate for your situation, ask your vet or a trainer.
