BB

BB's name on our site covers one specific product: the Bb Rub Grooming Mitt, a rubber-nubbed glove worn over the hand for loosening loose hair during a fuss or a bath. It is a simple tool rather than a full grooming system, and that is exactly what it is sold as.

What the mitt actually does

Worn like a glove, the rubber nubs catch loose, dead hair as you stroke a dog or cat, which is a gentler introduction to grooming than a metal brush for an animal that is not keen on being brushed. It doubles as a bath mitt for working shampoo through the coat.

It is not a de-shedding tool in the way a proper undercoat rake is, and it will not shift a matted or heavily tangled coat. For that, our grooming-brushes range has tools built specifically for the job.

Who it suits

Short-coated dogs and cats that shed a moderate, steady amount get the most out of a mitt like this — it lifts loose hair without pulling at the skin the way a stiff brush can on a nervous animal.

It is also a good starting point for a puppy, kitten or rescue animal that has never been brushed and needs a gentler introduction before moving on to a proper brush later.

Getting the most from it

Use the mitt on a dry coat for everyday loose-hair removal, working in the direction the coat grows rather than against it, which is gentler on the skin and picks up more loose hair in one pass. A few short sessions a week does more for a moderately shedding dog than one long, infrequent session.

Rinse the rubber nubs clean under a tap after use rather than leaving hair to build up between them, since a mitt clogged with old hair picks up far less on the next go. Left to dry properly, a rubber mitt like this lasts a long time before it needs replacing. A quick check before each use also gives you a chance to feel for any lumps, sore patches or new lumps on the skin that a full brush might miss.

Common questions

Will a grooming mitt replace regular brushing?
Not for a longer-coated or heavily shedding animal. A mitt is good for everyday touch-ups and loosening surface hair, but a proper brush or undercoat rake is still needed for a coat that mats or sheds heavily through the year.
Can I use the mitt in the bath?
Yes, that is one of its main uses — the rubber texture helps work shampoo through the coat down to the skin, and rinses clean easily afterwards, which is handy for a dog that tolerates a mitt better than a flannel.
Is it suitable for cats as well as dogs?
Generally yes for a cat that tolerates handling, since the gentle rubber texture is less startling than a stiff brush. Introduce it slowly with a nervous cat, working in short sessions rather than a full groom straight away.
