Baskerville dog muzzles

Baskerville is a long-established muzzle brand, best known for the basket-style design that lets a dog pant, drink and take a treat while still preventing biting. We stock a selection from the range as our go-to muzzle line, alongside the softer mesh style for dogs who only need brief, gentle restraint.

Why the basket design is the one most commonly recommended

A basket muzzle, rather than a fabric one, allows a dog to open its mouth fully — which means they can pant to cool down, drink water, and be given a small treat through the bars, none of which a tight fabric muzzle allows. That matters for anything longer than a few minutes at the vet or groomer.

The trade-off is that a basket muzzle needs a proper fit to work safely: too loose and a dog can still nip through the gap at the front, too tight and it rubs. Measuring your dog's snout length and the widest point, rather than guessing a size from their overall build, is worth doing before you buy.

The Ultra-style muzzle, made from soft moulded rubber rather than a rigid metal basket, is often a gentler introduction for a dog who has never worn one before, since it flexes slightly rather than pressing into a wriggling dog's face the way a harder material can during the first few fittings.

What we stock, and who it suits

Our range includes several Baskerville basket muzzle sizes and styles, from the tighter mesh option for brief use up to the wider-fit basket design for dogs who need to wear one for longer periods, such as during travel, at the vet, or while a training or behaviour plan is under way.

This is a brand worth reaching for whether the need is precautionary — a nervous dog at the vet — or ongoing, such as a dog who is muzzle-trained as part of managing reactivity. Getting the size and shape right matters more than the specific model, so measure first and use the size guide before ordering.

Introduce a new muzzle gradually rather than fitting it for the first time right before something stressful — a few short, calm sessions at home with treats offered through the bars helps a dog associate it with something positive rather than only with the vet visit or journey it is eventually needed for.

Common questions

How do I measure my dog for a Baskerville muzzle?
Measure the length from the tip of the nose to just below the eyes, and the circumference around the widest part of the snout, roughly an inch below the eyes. Compare both figures against the size chart for the specific style, since basket and mesh designs are not sized identically.
Can my dog drink water while wearing a Baskerville muzzle?
Yes, that is the main advantage of the basket style over a fabric muzzle — the gaps allow a dog to drink, pant and take small treats while it is fitted, which makes it suitable for longer wear than a close-fitting fabric design.
Is a muzzle a sign that a dog is dangerous?
No. Muzzles are used for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with aggression — nervous dogs at the vet, recovery after surgery, preventing scavenging on a walk, or as part of a training plan. Treat it as a management tool rather than a label on the dog wearing it.
