Best harness for a Golden Retriever
A Golden Retriever generally does best in a well-padded harness sized for a broad chest and a dense double coat, with the choice between a back-clip and a front-clip design coming down to how much your particular dog pulls. A front-clip or dual-clip harness gives you more control over a young or enthusiastic puller, while a back-clip suits a dog that already walks nicely on the lead.
Fit matters more than style with this coat
A Golden Retriever's dense, water-resistant double coat means a harness with thin, unpadded straps can rub and flatten fur over time, particularly under the front legs and across the chest where the straps sit closest to the skin. A wider, padded strap spreads the pressure and is generally more comfortable over a long walk.
Because Goldens vary a fair amount in build between a leaner working-line dog and a stockier show-line dog, it is worth checking the actual girth measurement on the harness against your own dog rather than buying by breed name alone — an adjustable harness with a few points of adjustment copes better with that variation.
Back-clip or front-clip
A back-clip harness, with the lead attachment between the shoulders, suits a Golden that already walks reasonably well on the lead and is the more comfortable option for a dog that does not pull much. A front-clip harness, with the attachment on the chest, gives you more steering control over a dog that pulls, because it turns the dog gently sideways rather than letting it drive forward into the pressure.
Many harnesses now offer both a front and a back attachment point on the same harness, which is a reasonable middle ground if you are not sure which your dog will need or if you want the option of both for training and for relaxed walks.
What else to check
Look for a harness that does not sit over the windpipe or restrict the shoulders when your dog is moving at a trot, and step your dog through a few strides in the shop or garden before committing to a size. A step-in design is often easier with a large, strong dog than one that goes over the head.
