A German Shepherd needs a harness built for a large, strong, deep-chested dog rather than one sized down from a small-breed design. What a German Shepherd actually needs from a harness
German Shepherds are a large, athletic breed with a deep chest and a build that carries real strength, whether or not an individual dog pulls on lead. A harness that fits a Labrador or a spaniel is not automatically the right shape for a Shepherd's proportions, so sizing by breed alone is less reliable than measuring your own dog's chest and neck.

You should be able to fit two fingers flat under any strap when it is fastened — snug enough not to slip, loose enough not to rub.
A front-clip point helps with a dog that pulls, by turning the dog gently to the side rather than letting the full weight go into a straight-line pull against the handler. A back clip is more comfortable for a dog that already walks well, and some harnesses offer both.
Material and build for a strong dog
Stitching, D-rings and buckles matter more on a Shepherd than on a smaller, lighter breed, simply because there is more force running through them on a bad day. Padded straps across the chest reduce rubbing on a dog that is out for a genuine walk rather than a short stroll, which most Shepherds are.
A harness that is easy to get on and off matters day to day more than any single feature on a spec sheet, particularly for a dog this size where wrestling with buckles in the rain gets old fast. Reflective stitching or a strip is worth having given how commonly the breed is walked in low light.
Leads and everyday use
A harness is only half the picture — the lead attached to it matters for control on a strong dog too. A sturdy lead with a comfortable, padded handle holds up better over daily use than a thin lead sized for a much smaller dog.
