Ferret food
Ferrets are obligate carnivores, so a food genuinely made for them looks quite different from the seed-and-veg mixes common in the wider small-pet aisle. Our range includes dedicated ferret foods such as Burgess Excel Ferret Nuggets, Alpha Ferret Feast, Selective Supreme Science Selective Ferret and Vitalin Natural Ferret, sitting within our broader small-pet food range.

Why ferret food is not the same as general small-pet food
A lot of small-pet food is built for species like rabbits and guinea pigs, which need a diet high in fibre from hay and plant matter. Ferrets are obligate carnivores with a much shorter digestive system, so they need a high-protein, high-fat diet built around meat rather than plant fibre, and a food genuinely formulated for ferrets reflects that difference in its ingredients list.
A dedicated ferret food like Burgess Excel Ferret Nuggets or Selective Supreme Science Selective Ferret is worth choosing over a generic small-animal mix for exactly this reason — the nutritional needs are different enough that 'small pet food' as a general category does not automatically mean 'suitable for a ferret'.
Choosing and feeding a ferret well
Look for a food where meat is genuinely the primary ingredient, and check that it is specifically labelled for ferrets rather than a generic small-animal or even a cat food, which some owners mistakenly reach for because ferrets are also carnivores — the balance is not the same. Vitalin Natural Ferret and Alpha Ferret Feast are both formulated with this dietary need specifically in mind.
Introduce a new food gradually if you are switching from what a ferret is used to, mixing it in over several days rather than swapping overnight, and keep fresh water available at all times alongside whatever dry food you choose.

Common questions
- Can ferrets eat regular small-pet food, like a rabbit or guinea pig mix?
- No, not as a main diet. Rabbit and guinea pig food is built around fibre from plants, while ferrets need a high-protein, high-fat diet as obligate carnivores. Choose a food specifically labelled for ferrets rather than a general small-animal mix.
- Can I feed my ferret cat food instead of a dedicated ferret food?
- It is better to use a food made specifically for ferrets where possible, since their nutritional balance differs from a cat's even though both are carnivores. A dedicated ferret food like the ones in our range is formulated with a ferret's specific needs in mind.
- How do I switch my ferret onto a new food?
- Mix the new food in gradually with what they are already eating over several days rather than switching all at once, watching for any change in appetite or stools. A sudden change is more likely to cause a digestive upset, even between two good-quality ferret foods.
- Do ferrets need constant access to food and water?
- Yes, ferrets have a fast metabolism and a short digestive system, so they generally do better with food available through the day rather than one or two large meals, alongside constant access to fresh water. Check the guidance on your specific food for portioning.
