Holiday food blocks for fish
A holiday food block is built to solve one specific problem: keeping fish fed for a week or two without anyone coming round to feed them daily. It dissolves slowly, releasing a small amount of food over time rather than all at once.
What we stock
We carry King British's Holiday Food Block and Tetra's Goldfish Holiday Food, both designed to feed a tank for up to around two weeks from a single block, alongside general holiday feeding options like Supa's Fish Food Holiday and TetraMin's Holiday food. Each is designed to dissolve gradually rather than break apart and cloud the water in one go.
These are a genuinely different product from everyday flake or pellet food, built specifically for slow release rather than a single feeding — don't use a holiday block as a regular daily food, since it isn't formulated or portioned for that.
How to use one
Introduce the block a day or so before you leave if possible, so you can see how your fish respond to it before you're not there to check. Follow the pack guidance on how many blocks to use for your tank size, since overfeeding — even slowly — can affect water quality over a two-week absence.
For trips longer than the block's stated feeding window, or if you're at all unsure, an automatic feeder or asking someone to feed manually partway through the trip is a more reliable option than stretching a single block beyond what it's designed for.

Common questions
- How long does a holiday food block last?
- Most of the blocks we stock are designed to feed a tank for up to around two weeks, but check the specific product's guidance, since this varies between brands and depends on your tank size and fish load.
- Will a holiday block cloud my tank water?
- It shouldn't, if used as directed — these blocks are designed to dissolve slowly rather than break apart quickly. Using too many blocks for your tank size is more likely to affect water quality than using the correct amount.
- Can I use a holiday block instead of normal food all the time?
- No, it's designed specifically for slow release while you're away, not as a substitute for your fish's usual daily food. Go back to normal feeding as soon as you're home.
- Do I need to remove the block when I get back?
- Check the product's guidance, but generally any remaining piece is best removed once you're back to resume normal feeding, rather than left in the tank indefinitely alongside regular food.
