Holiday food for pond fish is a slow-dissolving block that feeds the pond gradually over several days rather than a normal daily food dropped in all at once. It exists for peace of mind more than necessity — healthy adult pond fish can comfortably go a week or more without feeding in mild weather, so the block is there for longer trips or your own reassurance.
How a holiday block actually works
Rather than sinking or floating like normal food, a holiday block dissolves slowly in the water over several days, releasing a small amount of feed continuously instead of one large daily portion. That steady trickle matters more than it sounds: dumping a week's worth of normal food in on the day you leave just fouls the water while you are away.
Most blocks are rated for a specific number of days, and it is worth buying for the length of the actual trip rather than rounding up — an oversized block releasing food into a pond nobody is checking is more likely to affect water quality than a fish going a day or two underfed.
When you genuinely need one
In mild to warm weather, healthy adult goldfish and koi in an established pond can go a week to ten days without any feeding at all and show no ill effects — their metabolism simply slows and they graze on whatever algae and natural food is already in the pond. A holiday block is most useful for trips longer than that, or if you would rather not leave the pond completely unfed.
It matters more in a newer pond with fewer natural food sources, or with young or thin fish that have less reserve to draw on. In cold weather, when fish are barely feeding anyway, a holiday block is rarely necessary at all — most pond keepers stop feeding altogether once the water drops below around 10°C.

Common questions
- How long will a pond holiday food block last?
- Most blocks are labelled for somewhere between seven and fourteen days, depending on the pond size and how many fish are eating from it. Check the specific product's guidance and buy for the length of your trip, since an undersized block for a long holiday leaves fish properly unfed.
- Will a holiday block dirty the pond water?
- A correctly sized block dissolves slowly and should not cause a noticeable problem, but an oversized one for the pond, or one left in on top of an automatic feeder still running, can add more waste than the pond's filtration copes with. When in doubt, size down rather than up.
- Can I just ask a neighbour to feed my fish instead?
- You can, and for trips under a couple of weeks it is often unnecessary either way, since healthy adult fish tolerate short unfed periods well. A holiday block is really an alternative for people without anyone available to check the pond, not a better option than a neighbour who can look in.
- Do I still need holiday food in winter?
- Usually not. Fish feed very little once water temperature drops below around 10°C, and many pond keepers stop feeding entirely over the coldest months regardless of whether anyone is away. A holiday block is mainly a warm-weather product for exactly that reason.
