Goldfish food

Goldfish food comes mostly as flakes, sticks, pellets or granules, and which one suits your fish depends more on how they feed and the size of your tank or pond than on the brand printed on the tub. We carry a solid spread from Tetra, King British, Aquarian and Fluval.

Flakes, sticks, pellets and granules

Flakes are the most common everyday food, floating on the surface long enough for most goldfish to feed comfortably, while sticks and pellets are denser and suit larger or pond-kept fish that feed more forcefully. Floating pellets stay on the surface, while sinking ones are aimed at fish that feed lower in the water.

Granules, like Fluval's Bug Bites range, sit somewhere between a flake and a pellet in size and are worth trying if your fish seem to struggle picking up flakes or if you keep a mixed tank where a smaller, denser food suits more fish at once.

Feeding goldfish properly

Goldfish are enthusiastic eaters and will beg for food long after they've had enough, so overfeeding is a far more common problem than underfeeding. Uneaten food breaking down in the water is also what drives a lot of avoidable water quality problems in a goldfish tank.

Feed only what your fish can finish within a couple of minutes, and remove anything left over rather than letting it sit and foul the water — that single habit does more for a goldfish's health than switching between food brands ever will.

Common questions

How often should I feed my goldfish?
Most owners feed small amounts once or twice a day rather than one large feed, since goldfish will keep eating past the point of being full. Little and often, with nothing left over after a couple of minutes, works better than one big meal.
Should I feed floating or sinking food to goldfish?
It depends on how your fish feed — surface feeders do well on floating flakes or pellets, while fish that spend more time lower in the tank or pond do better with a sinking food, so watching your fish's feeding habits is the best guide.
Why does my goldfish tank get cloudy after feeding?
Overfeeding is the most common cause — uneaten food breaks down in the water and drives up ammonia and bacterial growth. Feed less at a time and remove anything left over after a couple of minutes to keep the water clearer.
Can I feed the same food to goldfish in a pond and a tank?
Generally yes, though pond fish often do well on a slightly larger stick or pellet given the bigger space, while tank-kept goldfish usually manage flakes or smaller granules more easily.
