The instruction most people skip
King British say to feed 2 to 3 times a day, only as much as the fish will finish, and to lift out anything left uneaten. It is that last clause that decides whether the tank stays clear, and it is the one everybody ignores. No calorie figure and no gram weight per feed is published for this food, so the portion has to be judged by what actually gets eaten rather than measured out. Two other things: it is not a tropical food, and it is not grain free — whole wheat is in the ingredient list, which matters if you are avoiding it deliberately.
Why we chose it
Sinking is what you are actually buying here, and it is the one thing a flake cannot do at any price. It is a complete food as well, so it replaces what is already in the cupboard rather than joining it — which is the difference between a tub that gets used up and a tub that gets forgotten. A 150g tub is a lot of pellets for the money at this end of the shelf.

Full description
Most of what goes wrong in a small coldwater tank starts life as food that nobody ate. It settles, it breaks down, and the water turns long before the fish look any different — so the question of where a food ends up is not a detail, it is most of the job.
This one is built to go down rather than sit on top. King British's stated reason is that a fish taking food from the surface takes in air along with it, and swallowed air can bring on swim bladder problems; a sinking pellet removes the choice. It is a complete food for coldwater fish, meaning it is formulated to be the entire diet rather than an addition to flakes. Protein is 37% and comes from more than one direction — herring meal, shrimp meal, insect meal and salmon oil sit alongside whole pea and mycoprotein, with brewer's yeast at the head of the ingredient list. Fat is 8%, crude fibre 5.5% and crude ash 6%, and the vitamin pack is declared: vitamin C at 320 mg/kg, vitamin E at 70 mg/kg, betaine at 1440 mg/kg.

Who it's for: anyone keeping goldfish or shubunkins in a tank rather than a pond who wants one complete food instead of a flake plus extras, and anyone currently losing the battle with cloudy water.

Common questions
Does it replace flake food, or go alongside it?
It replaces it. This is a complete food, formulated to meet the full nutritional requirements of coldwater fish on its own.
Why does it sink?
Deliberately. King British's reason is that a fish feeding at the surface takes in air along with the food, and that gulped air can bring on swim bladder problems.
Where does the protein come from?
Protein is 37%. Herring meal, shrimp meal, insect meal and salmon oil are in the ingredient list, alongside plant proteins including whole pea and mycoprotein.
Is it only for goldfish?
It is formulated for coldwater fish generally, so shubunkins and other coldwater species are covered too. It is not a tropical food.
Is it grain free?
No. Whole wheat is in the ingredient list.
