Dog car seat belts
A dog car seat belt is a short strap that clips onto an existing harness on one end and into your car's seatbelt buckle on the other, limiting how far a dog can move around the car without needing a full travel harness system. It is a simple, cheap way to add restraint to a harness a dog already wears comfortably.
How it fits with a harness you already own
A seat belt attachment on its own is not a restraint — it needs a properly fitted harness to clip onto, since attaching one to a collar risks injury to the neck under any sudden force. If your dog already wears a well-fitted walking harness, a bungee-style car seat belt is often the simplest way to add restraint without buying a whole new travel harness.
The bungee design in particular gives a small amount of give, which is more comfortable for a dog on a long journey than a completely rigid strap, while still limiting how far they can move if you brake suddenly.
Fitting it in the car
Keep the strap short enough that your dog can sit or lie down comfortably but cannot reach the front seats or footwells, and always route it through the rear seatbelt buckle rather than looping it round a headrest unless the product specifically says that is how it is designed to be used.
Check the clip at both ends before every longer journey — the harness attachment and the seatbelt buckle connection are the two points doing all the work, and a worn or damaged clip is the most common way this kind of restraint fails.

- No, this is not recommended — a collar concentrates force on the neck if the car stops suddenly or your dog lunges forward, which can cause serious injury. Always attach a car seat belt restraint to a properly fitted harness instead.
- Is a bungee seat belt as safe as a full travel harness?
- A bungee seat belt attached to a good harness offers real restraint for normal driving and sudden stops, though a dedicated crash-tested travel harness is built and tested to a higher standard for serious impacts. For most everyday journeys, a harness plus a seat belt clip is a reasonable, practical setup.
