Hard-shell dog carriers

A hard-shell carrier trades a bit of flexibility for real structure — it holds its shape under weight, won't collapse if something's stacked on top of it, and generally offers more protection in transit than a soft-sided bag. It's the format most airlines and many carriers ask for by name.

What we stock

We carry an airline-approved hard-sided carrier with ventilated sides, built to the kind of specification airlines look for when pets travel as cargo or in the hold, a hard-shell backpack carrier with a paw-print ventilated door for hands-free carrying, and a hard-sided travel carrier that includes a built-in feeding bowl for longer trips.

All three keep their shape regardless of how they're carried or stacked, which matters for security and for a nervous dog who feels steadier in a solid box than a bag that shifts and flexes around them.

When a hard case makes sense

Air travel is the clearest case — check your airline's exact requirements before booking, since hard-shell specifications vary and getting it wrong at the airport is a genuinely stressful way to find out. Beyond flying, a hard case also suits regular car travel for extra security, or any situation where the carrier might get knocked or stacked with other luggage.

For a short trip to the vet or round the corner, a soft-sided carrier is often lighter and just as suitable — a hard case is worth the extra weight and bulk specifically when the protection or airline compliance actually matters.

Common questions

Do all airlines accept the same type of carrier?
No, requirements vary by airline and by route, covering size, ventilation and construction. Always check your specific airline's pet travel policy before booking rather than assuming any hard-shell carrier will be accepted.
Is a hard-shell carrier better than a soft one for a nervous dog?
It can be, since some dogs feel more secure in a solid, stable box than a bag that moves and flexes as they shift around inside it. Other dogs prefer the softer, more enclosed feel of a fabric carrier, so it can come down to your individual dog's preference.
How do I clean a hard-shell carrier?
Most hard-shell carriers wipe down easily with warm water and a pet-safe cleaner, which is one practical advantage over a fabric carrier if there's ever an accident during a journey. Check the specific product's care guidance for anything beyond a basic wipe-down.
