Beyond flying, a hard case also suits regular car travel for extra security, or any situation where the carrier might get knocked or stacked with other luggage.
For a short trip to the vet or round the corner, a soft-sided carrier is often lighter and just as suitable — a hard case is worth the extra weight and bulk specifically when the protection or airline compliance actually matters.
