An unrestrained dog in a car is a hazard twice over. It can climb into the footwell or the driver's lap while you are moving, and in a sudden stop it becomes a projectile. A tether fixes the first of those cheaply and immediately: it clips into the standard seat-belt buckle at one end and onto a harness at the other, and it takes seconds to fit in whatever car you happen to be getting into.

The strap is nylon webbing with a metal clasp, 2.5cm wide and 70cm long, and it adjusts so a dog has enough slack to sit up, turn round or lie down without being able to reach the front seats. That balance is the whole of the design, since too short is miserable on a long journey and too long defeats the point of it. Five colours, and it works with most harnesses on the market.

Attach this to a harness, never a collar. In a hard stop, a tether on a collar puts the entire force of the dog's body through its neck. A tether is a restraint that stops a dog moving around the car; it is not crash-tested safety equipment, and a crate or a crash-tested harness is the better answer if you drive long distances with your dog.
