The back seat of a car is an awkward shape for a dog: a bench, a sudden drop into the footwell, and nothing to brace against on a roundabout. This quilted bed fills that shape in. It lies across the rear seats and over the gap so there is one level surface from door to door, which puts a stop to the constant scrabbling that makes some dogs dread the car before it has even started moving.

The top is quilted in a checkered pattern that looks more like a throw than car equipment, in brown, green or pink. Raised side panels give the contained feel that settles a nervous traveller, and a mesh window keeps your dog in sight of you as you drive. Between the cover and the upholstery, fur, mud and claws stay off the seat itself, which is the part you cannot put through a washing machine at the end of a wet weekend.

• Quilted checkered top in brown, green or pink
• Bridges the footwell for one flat surface
• Raised side panels for a contained feel
• Mesh window to keep your dog in view
• Sizes 40x50cm, 60x80cm, 70x90cm and 60x135cm
• Shields seats from fur, mud and claws

On choosing a size: measure your rear bench from door to door and pick by that, not by your dog. The 60x135cm covers a full bench, while the smaller sizes suit a single seat or fill a footwell for one small dog. Note that nothing here is a crash restraint, so keep using a harness and tether alongside it.

What the options mean. Sold in sizes from 40x50cm to 60x135cm — £11.99 to £26.99.

Who it's for: Dogs who travel often and slide about on the seat, and owners who want the back of the car back afterwards.
