Owners chasing a coat and skin improvement are often told to add a fish oil supplement to whatever the dog already eats, when the more direct route is to start with a food where the oil is already the point.

This recipe is built around dried fish as the sole animal protein, with salmon oil added on top, giving it a noticeably higher omega-3 figure than Burns' poultry-based recipes carry. Brown rice supplies most of the carbohydrate, rounded out with oats, peas and a small amount of seaweed.

On the smell. Fish-based dry food smells more strongly of fish than a chicken or duck recipe does, both in the bag and on a dog's breath - Burns don't publish anything about this, but it's the trade-off most owners report when they switch to a fish recipe for the skin and coat benefit. Worth knowing before a full bag is opened, if that's likely to be an issue in the house.

Who it's for: adult, senior and sensitive dogs where fish is the preferred protein - whether for a suspected reaction to a mainstream meat, or simply for the higher omega-3 this recipe carries.
