Grain-free salmon dog food
Grain-free salmon dog food swaps the usual wheat, maize or rice for another carbohydrate source such as potato or pea, and uses salmon as the named protein instead of chicken, lamb or beef. Owners tend to reach for it either because their dog has shown a sensitivity to a more common protein, or simply because their dog does well on fish. Look at where salmon sits in the ingredient list — as the first, named ingredient it should make up a meaningful share of the recipe, rather than appearing further down alongside other, unnamed fish or meat. The percentage declaration on UK pet food labels makes this checkable rather than guesswork.
As with any new food, introduce it gradually over several days rather than swapping bowls overnight, and watch how your dog's coat, stools and energy respond over the following couple of weeks before deciding it is or is not the right recipe for them.

- Is grain-free food better for dogs than grain-inclusive food?
- Not as a general rule. Most dogs digest grain perfectly well, and grain-free is worth choosing for a specific reason — a known sensitivity, or simply preference — rather than as a default upgrade. Both types of recipe can be nutritionally complete when made properly.
- Is salmon a good protein for dogs with allergies?
- It can be a useful alternative if a dog reacts to a more common protein like chicken or beef, since it gives the digestive system something different to work with. It is not automatically hypoallergenic, and a genuinely allergic dog should be assessed by a vet rather than moved between proteins by trial and error alone.
- How do I know if grain-free salmon food suits my dog?
