Cat Water Fountains
Choose a cat water fountain by its drinking surface, reservoir size and cleaning needs. Compare the range below, or read our best cat water fountains guide for a shortlist with the reasons behind each pick.
Start with the drinking surface. Stainless steel and ceramic bowls do not scratch and are easier to keep hygienic than plastic, which matters for a cat prone to chin acne. Then size the reservoir for the longest stretch the fountain will run without you topping it up: the range here runs from about 2.5 to 4 litres, and a pump that runs dry is loud enough to put a cat off for good. If there is no socket near where your cat drinks, a cordless or sensor model avoids a trailing cable. Check the replacement filters are easy to buy before you commit, and keep the old bowl down for the first fortnight while your cat gets used to the new one.
Our quick picks
In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

Best without a socket
Cordless Filter-Free Cat Water Fountain 3L
Why we picked it
Most cats want their water away from both the food and the tray, and in a typical kitchen that corner has no socket. Running on battery removes the constraint entirely. No cartridges to buy, but you clean it by hand instead.

Best ceramic fountain
Ancol Whale Cat Fountain
Why we picked it
Ceramic rather than plastic is the whole argument. Plastic fountains scratch, the scratches hold bacteria, and they end up smelling — ceramic goes in the dishwasher and comes out properly clean.

Best larger steel fountain
304 Stainless Steel Pet Water Fountain 3.2L
Why we picked it
Three point two litres means you are not refilling it daily, and 304 steel is the grade that will not pit or hold a biofilm. Still needs stripping and rinsing every couple of weeks, or buying steel was pointless.

Why fountains help fussy drinkers
Some cats take to a moving stream; others prefer a bowl. Keep fresh water available in a familiar bowl while introducing a fountain.
Choose a design that is easy to refill and take apart. A filter does not replace regular cleaning or fresh water.
Keeping the water clean
Replace the filter as recommended and rinse the pump every week or two to keep the flow quiet and the water clear.
Stainless steel and ceramic bowls are easier to keep hygienic than plastic and are kinder to chin-prone cats.
Material: why steel and ceramic beat plastic
Plastic bowls scratch, and the scratches hold bacteria and are the usual cause of feline chin acne. Stainless steel is the safe all-rounder: it goes in the dishwasher, it does not chip, and it does not hold a smell. Ceramic is heavier and more stable, and looks better on a kitchen floor, but a dropped one is a broken one. If you buy plastic, make sure it is BPA-free and be honest about how often you will scrub it.
Noise is the thing that gets a fountain switched off
A fountain that buzzes or gurgles ends up unplugged in a cupboard, and a cat will not drink from something that hums. Two design details prevent most of the noise: a pump that sits fully under the water rather than half exposed, and a low-water cut-off so it never runs dry and rattles. Keep the reservoir topped up and a decent fountain settles to a trickle you stop noticing within a day.
Filters, and how many parts you are willing to wash
The fewer parts, the more likely the fountain stays clean. Look for a bowl and reservoir that lift apart without tools and a pump you can open to rinse the impeller, which is where slime builds. Carbon filters keep the water tasting fresh; check the replacements are cheap and easy to get in the UK before you commit, because an obscure filter size is how a good fountain ends up running unfiltered.
Capacity, noise, and getting a cat to switch
Capacity matters more than it looks if you are out all day. A pump running dry is loud, and a cat who hears that once will often refuse the fountain afterwards — so size the reservoir for the longest stretch it will go unattended rather than for the number of cats.
Keep the old bowl for a fortnight after the fountain arrives. Some cats take days to switch, and removing the alternative on day one is how a cat ends up drinking nothing at all.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions
Are water fountains noisy?
Most run very quietly. Keeping the reservoir topped up and the pump clean stops the gurgling sound that comes from a low water level.
How often should I change the filter?
Typically every 2–4 weeks, depending on use and how many pets drink from it. Check the product page for the exact schedule.
Can dogs use them?
Smaller fountains suit cats and small dogs. For larger dogs, choose a higher-capacity model.
What size cat water fountain do I need?
Size it for the longest time it will run without being topped up, rather than for the number of cats. One cat and a daily refill is well served by around 2.5 litres; a multi-cat home, or a fountain left over a long working day, is better at 3–4 litres. A pump that runs dry gets noisy, and a cat that hears it once may refuse the fountain afterwards.
Does a fountain with a filter still need cleaning?
Yes. A filter keeps the water tasting fresh but does not stop slime building up on the bowl and inside the pump. Empty and wash the bowl and reservoir every few days, rinse the pump every week or two, and change the filter on the schedule given on the product page.
