Why deshedding tools work where brushes don’t
Double-coated breeds — think Huskies, German Shepherds, Labradors and most cats — grow a dense underlayer that sheds in clumps, especially in spring and autumn. A deshedding edge or undercoat rake gets down through the guard hairs to lift that loose fur out, which a slicker or bristle brush on the surface simply can’t reach.
Done regularly, it can cut the loose hair around your home dramatically — and it’s better for the coat too, since removing dead undercoat lets air circulate to the skin and helps prevent matting.
Using one without overdoing it
Brush in the direction of hair growth, in short gentle strokes, on a dry and tangle-free coat — never force it through a mat. A few minutes a couple of times a week is plenty; daily deep deshedding can irritate the skin and strip healthy coat.
Don’t use a deshedding tool on single-coated breeds (like Poodles or Yorkies), which don’t have an undercoat to remove — a slicker brush suits them better. Match the tool width to your pet’s size.

Common questions
Do deshedding brushes really reduce shedding?
They don’t stop the natural shedding cycle, but by removing loose undercoat before it drops they sharply cut the hair that ends up on your floor, sofa and clothes — many owners see a dramatic difference.
How often should I use a deshedding tool?
A couple of times a week for most double-coated pets, increasing during the spring and autumn moults. Avoid daily heavy use, which can irritate the skin and pull out healthy coat.
Can I use a deshedding brush on any dog?
Only on double-coated breeds with an undercoat. Single-coated breeds like Poodles and Yorkies don’t have one to remove, so a slicker brush or comb is the right tool for them.
