Why headwear works better than a costume

A hat on a soft elasticated band touches far less of your cat than a cape does, and comes off in a single movement. Most cats that refuse clothing outright will sit through a hat for the thirty seconds it takes to get a photograph.

Keep sessions short, keep treats to hand, and accept the first clear no. You will get a better picture from a relaxed cat in a hat than a miserable one in a full costume.

Check the strap

The elastic should sit under the chin without pressing into the throat, and you should be able to get a finger underneath it. Anything that has to be pulled tight to stay on is the wrong size.

Ears and wings must never cover the ear openings — a cat who cannot hear properly will not settle, and it is unfair as well as ineffective.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Will these fit a small dog too?

Many of them will — most are sized for cats and small breeds like chihuahuas, yorkies and pomeranians. Check the strap measurement on the product page against your dog’s head rather than assuming.

How long can my cat wear it?

Minutes, not hours, and never unsupervised. Headwear is for photographs and a short visit from family, not for wearing through the evening.

Is it safe to put my pet in a costume?

For short, supervised periods, yes. A costume must never restrict breathing, sight, hearing or movement, must have nothing small enough to chew off and swallow, and should never be left on an unattended pet — including overnight or during rough play. If your pet freezes, flattens their ears, or tries to back out of it, take it off and try a bandana instead.
