SmartBones for puppies
SmartBones are a range of rawhide-free chews — vegetable and starch-based sticks and bones wrapped around a layer of real chicken or beef — designed as a chewier, more digestible alternative to traditional rawhide. There is no chew in the range badged specifically "for puppies", but the Mini and Small sizes are the right starting point once a puppy is old enough to chew under supervision, and the softer texture is easier on new teeth than a dense rawhide bone.
Why owners look at SmartBones for a young dog
Traditional rawhide can be tough enough that a determined puppy tears off a chunk rather than working through it slowly, which is exactly the choking and blockage risk owners are trying to avoid. SmartBones are built the other way round: a softer core that a puppy can make headway on, wrapped in a thin layer of real meat that gives the chew its flavour without the density of a full rawhide hide.
That does not make them risk-free, and no chew is. A puppy left alone with any chew, however it is made, can still bite off and swallow a piece larger than they should. The point of choosing a softer chew is to reduce that risk, not remove the need to watch a young dog while they work on one.
Choosing the right size
SmartBones come in a handful of sizes across the range — Mini, Small, Medium and Large sticks and bones. For a puppy, start with Mini or Small rather than sizing up to "grow into", since a chew too big for a small mouth is harder to get a proper grip on and more likely to be gnawed at odd angles or swallowed in an unchewed lump.
As your puppy grows and their jaw strength increases, moving up a size is a judgement call based on how they actually chew — some dogs work a chew calmly for twenty minutes, others go at it fast and hard, and the second type needs closer supervision regardless of size.
How to introduce one safely
Give a new chew for the first time when you can sit with your puppy rather than leaving them with it in a crate or a different room. Watching the first few sessions tells you how they chew this particular product, which matters more than the packaging's stated age range.
Take the chew away once it has worn down to a small piece that could be swallowed whole, the same rule that applies to any dog chew regardless of brand. A half-finished SmartBone left in a bed overnight is a chew nobody is supervising.

Common questions
- Are SmartBones safe for puppies?
- They are designed to be softer and more digestible than traditional rawhide, which is why many owners choose them for a young dog, but no chew is risk-free unsupervised. Start with a Mini or Small size, watch the first few sessions, and take the chew away once it is small enough to swallow whole.
- What age can a puppy start on a SmartBone chew?
- There is no single fixed age — it depends on when your puppy is confidently eating solid food and chewing under supervision rather than mouthing everything. If in doubt, start later rather than earlier, and choose the smallest size in the range for a first try.
- Do SmartBones contain real meat?
- Yes, the outer layer is real chicken or beef wrapped around a vegetable and starch-based core, which is what gives the chew its flavour without the density of a full rawhide bone underneath.
- How long should a SmartBone chew last?
- It varies hugely by dog — a determined chewer can work through a Mini chew in one sitting, while a calmer dog might return to the same one over several days. Judge it by how your puppy chews rather than by a stated time on the packet, and take it away once it wears down small.
