Brand: SmartBones
Food type: Complementary

Full description

A treat built to toy and mini breed proportions rather than scaled down from a bigger dog's chew tends to fit better in both the mouth and the calorie budget, which is the whole reasoning behind this one.

SmartBones Mini Chicken Wrapped Chews wrap a layer of chicken breast (41% of the recipe) around a vegetable-based centre of wheat flour, maize starch, pea powder (3.6%), sweet potato powder (1.1%) and chicken liver (0.25%), with added vitamins and minerals. There is no rawhide in the recipe at all. The pack holds 9.

Rawhide-free, wrapped in chicken breast (41% of the recipe)
Vegetable-based centre with added vitamins and minerals
Vitamin E at 90IU/kg, manganese at 15mg/kg
Suitable for mini and toy dogs under 6kg
Pack of 9

One thing worth knowing. SmartBones' own feeding guide is banded by weight rather than a single figure: one treat over five days for a dog under 5kg, up to one a day for a dog between 5 and 25kg, and three to four a day for a dog over 25kg, all capped at 10% of daily calories — but this specific pack is sized and marketed for the smallest of those bands, so treat the larger figures as guidance for a different product in the range rather than this one.

Who it's for: owners of a small or toy-breed dog who want a rawhide-free chew sized to suit them, rather than a large dog's chew cut down.

Why we chose it

Sized for a small dog rather than shrunk from a bigger one is the actual difference here, and it matters because a mini or toy breed can genuinely struggle with a chew built to adult-medium-dog proportions. Rawhide-free is the other half of the case, for the same reasons as the rest of the SmartBones range.
