Flexi is the best-known brand of retractable dog lead, and for a puppy specifically, the honest answer is that a retractable lead is not the right tool for teaching loose-lead walking, but it can suit supervised exercise time once basic lead manners are established. The two uses call for different equipment, and it is worth knowing which stage your puppy is at before choosing.
Why a retractable lead isn't the training tool
Teaching a puppy to walk nicely on a lead relies on consistent, predictable feedback — a fixed-length lead lets you control exactly how much slack your puppy has and correct pulling clearly and immediately. A retractable lead's variable length works against this: a puppy who pulls is often rewarded by more line paying out rather than learning that pulling gets them nowhere, which can teach the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.
A fixed lead, ideally paired with a well-fitted harness for a puppy still growing into their coordination, is the better choice for structured walks and lead training in the first months, before introducing a retractable lead for a different purpose later.
Where a Flexi lead does have a place
Once a puppy has learned to walk reasonably nicely on a fixed lead, a retractable lead can be useful for giving them extra room to sniff and explore in an open, low-traffic space such as a quiet park, while keeping the option to bring them back in quickly if needed. It is a tool for supervised freedom, not for busy streets or crowded areas, where the variable length makes sudden control harder rather than easier.
