Vinyl dog toys

Vinyl is the material behind most classic squeaky toys — light, a bit springy, and usually the cheapest way to add a squeaker to a toy. It suits a certain kind of play rather than every dog, so it's worth knowing what vinyl is good at before picking one over a rope or rubber toy.

What's in this part of the shop

Our vinyl range includes classic shapes like a vinyl rope tug, a vinyl sausage rope toy, and seasonal novelties like a Halloween vinyl pumpkin, most with a built-in squeaker. They're generally lighter and softer to the bite than a solid rubber toy, which is part of why they're popular with dogs who enjoy a squeaky toy for shaking and carrying rather than heavy chewing.

Vinyl isn't the most durable material in the toy aisle — a determined chewer can get through one fairly quickly, and a punctured squeaker toy should be taken away and replaced rather than left for a dog to keep working at, since a torn toy is more likely to be swallowed in pieces.

How to choose, and when to replace

Vinyl suits a dog who plays by shaking, carrying and enjoying the squeak, more than a dog who chews with real force — for a strong chewer, a rubber or rope toy built for durability is generally the safer, longer-lasting choice. Size the toy to your dog's mouth so it's neither a choking hazard if too small nor unwieldy if too large.

Check any vinyl toy regularly for tears, and take it away as soon as you spot damage, since a squeaker or a torn piece of vinyl is a genuine swallowing risk once the toy's surface is broken.

Common questions

Are vinyl toys safe for dogs?
Used as intended, and supervised, most dogs get on fine with vinyl toys, but they're not built for heavy chewing the way a rubber toy is. Inspect them regularly and remove any toy that's torn or has a squeaker becoming exposed.
Why does my dog love the squeak so much?
The squeak mimics the sound of small prey for a lot of dogs, tapping into a natural instinct to chase and catch, which is why shaking and 'killing' a squeaky toy is such a common and satisfying game for them.
How long should a vinyl toy last?
It depends entirely on how your dog plays — a dog who carries and shakes a toy gently can make one last a long time, while a strong chewer might get through one in a single session. Replace it as soon as it's torn rather than waiting for it to fail completely.
Is vinyl a good choice for puppies?
It can be, for supervised play, since vinyl toys are generally lighter and softer than rubber, but puppies teethe hard and can get through a vinyl toy quickly. Keep an eye on the toy's condition and swap it out at the first sign of damage.
