Bird sand for cages and aviaries

Bird sand lines the floor of a cage or aviary, giving birds a natural surface to walk, forage and dust-bathe on rather than a bare tray or wire base. It's a substrate choice rather than a dietary one, and shouldn't be confused with grit, which serves a different, digestive purpose for some species.

What bird sand is for

Beyond simply lining the tray, sand gives birds something to scratch, forage and dust-bathe in, which is a natural behaviour for several species and one that a bare or sheet-lined cage doesn't offer at all. It also absorbs droppings better than a hard surface, making daily mess easier to deal with than it would be on bare metal or plastic.

Different sand products vary in texture and colour, from a fine, pale cage sand to a coarser aviary-grade product meant for larger, more heavily used spaces — check which is intended for indoor cage use versus an outdoor aviary before buying.

Sand versus grit, and changing it

Sand and grit are often confused but do different jobs: sand is primarily a floor substrate, while grit is swallowed by some species to aid digestion of whole seed. Some products combine the two, so check the packaging rather than assuming a bag labelled sand automatically covers your bird's grit needs, or vice versa.

Change sand fully on a regular schedule and spot-check in between for obvious soiling or dampness, since sand that's left too long stops absorbing effectively and can start to smell.

Common questions

Is bird sand the same as grit?
No — sand is a floor substrate for the cage or aviary, while grit is typically swallowed by some bird species to help digest whole seed. Some products do combine both functions, so check the specific packaging rather than assuming one automatically provides the other.
How often should I change bird sand?
A full change roughly weekly is a reasonable starting point for most cages, with spot-checking in between for any obviously soiled or damp patches. A larger, more heavily used aviary floor will need more frequent attention than a smaller single-bird cage.
Can I use builder's sand instead of bird sand?
No — sand sold for building or gardening isn't graded or cleaned to the standard needed for a bird's environment and can carry contaminants unsuitable for a cage. Stick to sand specifically sold for bird or small pet use, which is processed and graded with that in mind.
