A budgie's grit needs replacing more often than most owners assume, because sand that's been picked over for a week no longer does the job a fresh layer does - droppings and husks build up in it, and a bird stops using it the way it should.

This is a 2kg bag of Happy Pet bird sand, used as cage litter and blended with crushed oyster shell rather than being plain silica sand. The oyster shell gives a bird a genuine source of grit to peck at while it's down in the tray, on top of the sand's job of soaking up mess.

• 2kg bag
• Used as cage litter / bedding
• Blended with crushed oyster shell
• For cage birds

On the pack: Happy Pet don't state how often to change it, whether it's dust-extracted, or which species it suits beyond 'cage bird' generally, so go by how quickly the tray looks soiled rather than a schedule we haven't been given. A 2kg bag is a starting supply rather than a full season's worth for a busy cage.

Who it's for: owners of budgies, canaries and other cage birds who want a mineral-enriched litter rather than plain sand.
