A budgie's grit needs replacing more often than most owners assume, because sand that's been picked over for a week no longer does the job a fresh layer does - droppings and husks build up in it, and a bird stops using it the way it should.

This is a 2kg bag of Happy Pet bird sand, used as cage litter and blended with crushed oyster shell rather than being plain silica sand. The oyster shell gives a bird a genuine source of grit to peck at while it's down in the tray, on top of the sand's job of soaking up mess.
