Between the three junior Tuffy toys we keep, this pig is the chunky one. It measures 22.9cm long and 12.7cm across at 200g, so where the hippo is flatter and lighter, the pig gives a dog more body to grab and shake, which suits the ones who like to carry a toy about the house and thrash it enthusiastically rather than simply chew. It is made in China and arrives ready for a hard first week.

The build is standard Tuffy and it is the reason these outlive ordinary soft toys. Several layers of material are bonded rather than stitched as one skin, each seam takes several rows of stitching, and webbing is laid over the seams, because the seam is where a normal plush fails and starts shedding filling. It floats, which is handy for river walks and paddling pools, and the whole toy is machine washable, then air dried.

On expectations. Tough is a comparison, not a promise: a determined dog with unlimited time will eventually open any soft toy. Keep this to supervised play, check the seams over now and then, and retire it when the outer layer is breached rather than once filling is loose on the floor. Dogs who swallow fabric should be on solid rubber instead.
