A squeaky plush toy is a fairly ordinary present until it has a small extra idea built in, which is exactly what a detachable "invitation" piece does here — one small, separate part that turns a plush toy into something that reads more like a proper birthday gift than a generic squeaker.

The Birthday Pal is a plush toy measuring 26cm by 16cm, made from polyester, with an internal squeaker and crinkle material built into the body. It comes with a detachable invitation piece as part of the design, and is available in brown, pink or green.

• Polyester construction

On the detachable piece. Smart Choice do not tell us what the invitation piece is made from or whether it is intended to be removed permanently or reattached, so treat it, like the squeaker, as a component to supervise a dog around rather than something meant to be chewed off.

Who it's for: owners looking for a novelty birthday gift for a dog, particularly one that already enjoys squeaky plush toys and would get extra mileage from a toy with more than one part.
