Most bath-time arguments start at the head. A dog who has had shampoo in their eyes once will remember it, and every wash after that becomes a wrestling match. A no-tear formula is the fix, because it lets you work lather right up around the muzzle and ears without flinching, and that is exactly where the dirt collects. It is a gentler wash than a bargain-bin bottle, and it tends to show on the second bath rather than the first.

Lavender essential oils do the scenting, so what you are left with is a soft herbal smell rather than the sharp perfume that clings to a coat for days. The formula lifts dirt and odour while helping to settle dry, itchy skin, and coats come up softer once dry. The 237ml bottle goes a long way, because a mild shampoo like this wants working into an already wet coat rather than poured on neat.

• No-tear formula, gentle around the face and eyes
• Scented with lavender essential oils
• Helps ease dry, itchy skin
• Lifts dirt and odour from the coat
• Leaves the coat soft once dry
• 237ml bottle

On how often to use it: even a mild shampoo strips coat oils if you reach for it every week. Most dogs need a proper wash every four to six weeks, and most cats never need one at all. If your pet has broken skin, a hot spot or a diagnosed skin condition, speak to your vet before you use anything scented on them.

Who it's for: Dogs and cats needing a mild, pleasant-smelling shampoo for routine baths, and owners of pets who hate having their face washed.
