A growing puppy needs more protein and fat per meal than an adult dog doing the same job of just staying alive, which is the entire reason a puppy formula exists separately from an all-life-stages one.

This is James Wellbeloved's hypoallergenic puppy recipe, built on dried turkey protein at 24% and white and brown rice rather than wheat, and free from the beef, pork, soya, egg and dairy that most sensitivities trace back to. Naked oats, pea protein, whole linseed and a run of natural extracts — chicory, yucca, seaweed — round out the list, alongside fish oil for omega-3.

• Protein 30%, fat content 15%
• Crude fibre 2.4%, crude ash 7.6%
• Vitamin E at 180mg/kg
• Omega-3 at 1.1%, omega-6 at 3.8%
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs and dairy
• 2KG bag

On the grain-free question. This isn't a grain-free food. Naked oats, barley and rice all appear in the ingredients despite the hypoallergenic claim, which is specifically about excluding wheat and the named animal allergens rather than grains generally.

Who it's for: owners of a puppy with a known sensitivity to beef, pork, soya, eggs or dairy, who want a higher protein and fat recipe suited to growth.
