A growing puppy needs a different balance of everything to an adult dog, which is why feeding an adult recipe early is one of the more common mistakes new owners make without realising it. James Wellbeloved's puppy range keeps the single-protein approach of their adult food but raises the numbers to match a puppy's needs.

The named protein here is dried turkey, at 24% of the recipe, with white rice at 16%, naked oats, brown rice at 15%, whole linseed at 3.5% and pea protein. Protein comes out at 30%, fat at 15%, crude ash at 7.6% and crude fibre at 2.4%. As with the rest of the range it is built to exclude beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat.

• Single source animal protein: dried turkey (24%)
• Protein 30%, fat 15%, crude ash 7.6%, crude fibre 2.4%
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat
• White and brown rice as the main carbohydrate
• Whole linseed at 3.5%
• 15kg bag

On the size of the bag. A 15kg bag is a large amount of puppy food to commit to before you know whether a young dog will actually take to it, and puppies grow fast enough that their needs change within months of opening one. If you are trying this recipe for the first time, it may be worth sourcing a smaller trial bag elsewhere before buying at this size.

Who it's for: owners of a puppy who want a single-protein recipe from the start, whether that is for a known family history of food sensitivity or simply to keep things simple while the dog is growing.
