Burns was started by a vet who had seen poor diets cause skin, digestive and behaviour problems in his own patients, which is a different starting point to a food developed by a marketing team working backwards from a flavour name.

John Burns began making dog food in 1993 on that basis, and this recipe reflects it: brown rice at 67% leads the composition, well ahead of dried chicken at 20%, with oats, peas, chicken oil, sunflower oil, seaweed (0.5%) and minerals making up the rest. It's a single-source protein recipe — chicken and nothing else — built for easy digestion around a wholegrain rice base rather than a meat-first formula.
