Burns was started by a vet who had seen poor diets cause skin, digestive and behaviour problems in his own patients, which is a different starting point to a food developed by a marketing team working backwards from a flavour name.

John Burns began making dog food in 1993 on that basis, and this recipe reflects it: brown rice at 67% leads the composition, well ahead of dried chicken at 20%, with oats, peas, chicken oil, sunflower oil, seaweed (0.5%) and minerals making up the rest. It's a single-source protein recipe — chicken and nothing else — built for easy digestion around a wholegrain rice base rather than a meat-first formula.

• Protein 20%, fat 7.5%, fibre 2.2%, ash 6%
• Sodium 0.26%, calcium 1.1%, phosphorus 0.9%
• Omega-6 fatty acids 1.6%, omega-3 fatty acids 0.16%
• Brown rice (67%) leads the recipe, ahead of dried chicken (20%)
• Single-source protein: chicken
• 14KG sack

On the rice-first recipe. Brown rice at 67% is well ahead of the dried chicken at 20% here — this is a rice-based, hypoallergenic-style formula built around digestibility rather than a meat-forward recipe, and worth knowing if you were expecting chicken to be the larger share.

Who it's for: owners of an adult or senior dog, particularly one with a sensitive stomach, who want a single-source chicken recipe built on a wholegrain rice base rather than a richer, meat-first food.
