A dog covering miles of rough ground all day burns through calories a sofa-based dog never will, and the honest answer to that isn't a bigger bowl of the same food - it's a food built to carry more energy in the same volume.

This recipe is built on white rice and dried chicken, with whole linseed and fish meal added, giving it protein and fat well above Burns' everyday recipes. It's a complete food formulated specifically for the energy demands of genuinely hard-working dogs.

• Complete food for adult working dogs, formulated for higher energy output
• Composition: White Rice 37%, Dried Chicken 29%, Chicken Oil, Oats 7%, Peas, Whole Linseed, Fish Meal, Sunflower Oil, Seaweed 0.5%, Minerals
• Protein 26%, Fat 20%, Fibre 3.5%, Ash 6.5%
• Omega-6 4.04%, Omega-3 1.56%
• Contains both chicken and fish meal as animal ingredients
• 12KG bag

On the fat content. At 20% fat this is a genuinely calorie-dense food, meant for a dog working hard enough to need it - fed at the same amount as a lower-fat recipe to a dog that spends most of the day resting, it will put weight on quickly. Burns do not publish a specific activity threshold for when this recipe stops being appropriate, so that judgement is down to the owner or a vet rather than the label.

Who it's for: working dogs with a genuinely high daily energy output - farm dogs, search and rescue dogs, sporting dogs in full training - rather than a family pet with an active-sounding breed name but an ordinary daily routine.
