Breederpack Complete Working Dog is about as plain as a complete dry food gets, and that is the point of it. It is a mixed-shape crunchy kibble at 22% protein and 8.5% oils and fats, built to feed a lot of dog for very little money, which is why it turns up in kennels, rescue runs and gundog vans far more often than it turns up in a pet shop. There is nothing clever in the bag and the brand does not pretend otherwise.

The composition is written at category level: cereal first, then meat and animal derivatives, derivatives of vegetable origin, various sugars, minerals, vegetable protein extracts and yeasts. No animal is named and no percentage is given for any of them. The vitamin and trace element additives are declared properly, at Vitamin A 20000 IU/kg, Vitamin D3 1000 IU/kg and Vitamin E 63 IU/kg plus zinc, iron, manganese, copper, iodine and selenium. The label also declares colourants, so the different coloured pieces in the bag are dyed rather than being different ingredients.

"Working dog" is a label category, not a nutritional standard. In the UK, food sold specifically for working dogs is zero rated for VAT while ordinary pet food is not, and that is most of the reason a 15kg bag costs what this one costs. The phrase on its own guarantees nothing about protein or energy. The way to judge a working bag is the panel, and this one reads 22% protein and 8.5% oils and fats, which is a maintenance level rather than a performance one. Two stockists also transpose those last two figures, so treat 8.5% as approximate until you have a bag in your hand.

Who it's for: People feeding several dogs, or one large dog, who want a straightforward maintenance kibble and are not paying for a named recipe. If you want to know which animal the protein came from, or you are feeding a dog in hard condition through a working season, look at a food that names its meat and its percentage.
