A growing puppy, a pregnant bitch and a nursing mother all have one thing in common nutritionally — a higher energy demand than an ordinary adult dog — which is why this recipe is labelled for puppies but also cleared for gestation, lactation and adult toy breeds rather than puppies alone.

Chicken meal leads the ingredient list at 27%, followed by wheat, corn, animal fats, wheat middlings and rice, with fish oil and a small amount of dried chicory root (1%) as a natural prebiotic. Energy is declared at 375kcal per 100g, run at 28.0% protein and 14.0% fat to support growth.

On who else it suits. Beyond growing puppies, Purina also clear this recipe for gestation, lactation and for adult toy dogs — so it's worth checking which group applies before assuming "puppy" on the bag rules out an adult toy breed or a pregnant dog in your household.

Who it's for: owners of a puppy between 1.5 and 12 months old with an expected adult weight of 5-25kg, and also owners of a pregnant, nursing, or adult toy-breed dog covered by the same recipe.
