Product description

Broth rather than gravy, which means no starch and no gelling agent, just meat or fish suspended in its own stock with vegetables you can identify by sight. Three recipes across six pouches.

Read the beef one carefully: it is the only recipe in the selection where the broth comes first, so beef is 30% rather than 45%, with 5% beef liver on top. The chicken and the tuna are both 45%. Broccoli, apple, pumpkin, chickpeas and kale all appear at 5 to 10% each and are named individually. Applaws state there are no additives.

6 x 85g pouches, three recipes
Chicken 45%, tuna 45%, beef 30% plus 5% liver
No thickener, no additives
Tuna recipe is 663 kcal/kg

Broth pouches are watery, and that is the point. If your dog licks the liquid and leaves the solids you have not been sold short, you have bought a hydration topper rather than a meal. Dogs who prefer texture usually do better on the stew tins.

Who it's for: dogs who do not drink enough, and owners who want vegetables in the bowl without a mystery blend.

Why we chose it

Broth toppers are the easiest way to get water into a dog that will not drink, and a six-pack is the right size to find out whether yours cares about broccoli. We like that Applaws name every vegetable and its percentage instead of writing 'vegetables'.

Common questions

Is it a complete food?

No, it is complementary. Applaws intend it as a topper on their complete dry food or another complete diet.

How many pouches a day?

Up to three, per Applaws' own pouch pages, adjusted for size, weight, age and activity.

Why is there less beef than chicken or tuna?

In the beef recipe the broth is listed first, so beef comes in at 30% with a further 5% beef liver. The chicken and tuna recipes are both 45% meat or fish.

Are there additives?

Applaws state 'No additives' for this range in broth. There is no gelling agent in the broth recipes, unlike the gravy and stew ones.
