Can gerbils eat celery?
Yes, gerbils can eat celery in small amounts as an occasional extra. A small piece, with the stringy fibres trimmed off, is generally well tolerated, though celery is mostly water and fibre with little in the way of concentrated nutrition, so it works better as an occasional variety piece than a regular staple.

Why celery is a reasonable occasional treat
Celery contains no compounds known to be toxic to gerbils, and its high water content and crunch make it a reasonable occasional extra alongside a gerbil's main diet of a proper seed and grain mix. It offers some fibre, though not a great deal of concentrated nutrition compared with a gerbil's usual food, so it is more of a variety piece than a nutritionally important one.
Gerbils are naturally adapted to a fairly dry, arid environment, and because of this some owners are cautious about giving anything very high in water content too often, in case it loosens droppings — a small, occasional piece rather than a regular helping is the sensible approach.
Offering a variety of safe vegetables across the week, rather than relying on celery alone, gives a gerbil a bit more enrichment and interest at feeding time without leaning too heavily on any one food.
How to prepare it safely
Wash the celery first to remove any pesticide residue, and trim off the stringy fibres that run along the stalk, which can be harder for a small animal to chew through properly and are more likely to cause an issue than the celery flesh itself. Cut it into a small, manageable piece rather than offering a whole stick.
Avoid celery leaves that look wilted or any stalk that has started to go soft or brown, and never offer celery that has been salted, seasoned or cooked with anything added, since a gerbil's diet should stay very low in added salt.
It is worth doing this preparation step every time rather than only the first time you offer celery, since the stringy fibres are present in every stalk and do not become less of an issue with a gerbil that has had celery before.
How much and how often
A small piece, roughly a couple of centimetres of trimmed stalk, once or twice a week, is a sensible amount for most gerbils. Introduce it gradually the first time and watch how your gerbil copes with it before making it a regular addition.
If your gerbil develops loose droppings or seems less interested in its usual food after eating celery, stop offering it and return to its normal diet, and speak to your vet if anything seems off for more than a day or so.

Common questions
- Can gerbils eat celery leaves?
- A small amount of fresh, unwilted celery leaf is generally fine alongside the stalk, following the same rules — wash it first and offer only a small piece. Avoid any leaves that look wilted, slimy or past their best.
- Is celery good for a gerbil's teeth?
- The crunch of fresh vegetables like celery can offer a small amount of gnawing activity, but it is not a substitute for the wooden chews and proper diet a gerbil needs to keep its continuously growing teeth worn down. Treat it as a treat rather than a dental solution.
- How often can I give my gerbil celery?
- Once or twice a week, in a small trimmed piece, is a sensible amount for most gerbils. It works best as an occasional variety piece alongside a proper seed and grain mix rather than a regular daily food.
- What vegetables are safe for gerbils besides celery?
- Small amounts of carrot, cucumber and broccoli are commonly given alongside celery as occasional fresh extras. Introduce anything new gradually and in a small piece, watching how your gerbil copes with it before offering it again.
- Can gerbils eat celery every day?
- It is better kept to once or twice a week rather than a daily habit. A gerbil's main diet should come from a proper seed and grain mix, with vegetables like celery offered as an occasional addition rather than a everyday staple.
- Do gerbils need fresh vegetables in their diet?
- Not strictly, since a good-quality gerbil mix is formulated to meet their nutritional needs on its own, but small amounts of fresh vegetables like celery add variety and enrichment to feeding time, which many owners find their gerbils genuinely enjoy.
