Can gerbils eat cheese?

In a small enough amount, a plain taste of cheese is unlikely to seriously harm most gerbils, but it isn't something to make a regular habit of. Gerbils are omnivorous in the wild, eating seeds, plants and the occasional insect, and dairy simply isn't part of that natural diet.

Why gerbils don't need cheese

A wild gerbil's diet is built around seeds, grains and plant matter, with insects providing what little animal protein they get. Cheese doesn't fit anywhere in that picture, and it brings a fat and dairy content their digestion isn't really designed to handle regularly.

Some gerbils are also more sensitive to dairy than others, which can show up as loose droppings or general digestive upset after even a small amount, in much the same way that dairy doesn't sit well with plenty of other small animals kept as pets.

What can go wrong

Gerbils are tiny, so even a small piece of a fatty food like cheese represents a much bigger portion relative to their size than the same amount would for a larger pet. That makes it easier to overdo without really meaning to.

Beyond digestive upset, a diet that regularly includes rich, fatty extras like cheese can also contribute to a gerbil carrying more weight than is healthy for such a small animal, even if no single piece looks like very much to a person.

Signs to watch for

Keep an eye on droppings and general activity levels for a day or so after any accidental taste. Soft or unusually small droppings, or a gerbil that seems less active or interested in food than normal, are worth taking seriously.

Contact your vet if those signs don't settle within a day or two, or if your gerbil stops eating. Small animals like gerbils can decline quickly once appetite drops, so it's better to check in early rather than wait and hope it passes on its own.

What to offer instead

Seed and grain mixes formulated for gerbils, along with the occasional small piece of gerbil-safe vegetable, make far more sensible everyday treats than anything from the dairy aisle, and they're genuinely closer to what a gerbil would seek out naturally.

Our small pet food range includes options built around what gerbils actually thrive on, which is a safer place to look for a treat than reaching for cheese out of the fridge, and it's worth rotating between a few different safe options for variety.

A note on other 'people food' for gerbils

Cheese isn't the only kitchen item owners are sometimes tempted to share, and the same general caution applies to most processed or fatty human food, not just dairy. A gerbil's small size means even modest amounts of rich food go further than they would for a larger pet, so what looks like a tiny taste can still be a meaningful chunk of their daily intake.

If you're ever unsure whether something is safe to offer, it's simpler and safer to stick to foods and treats made specifically for gerbils and small pets rather than experimenting with whatever is in the kitchen at the time, and to check with your vet if you're ever genuinely unsure about something your gerbil has already eaten.

Common questions

Is cheese poisonous to gerbils?
No, it isn't toxic in the way some foods are, but it isn't appropriate as a regular food either. Its fat and dairy content don't suit a gerbil's natural diet, so it's best kept to a rare taste at most.
Can gerbils eat other dairy like yoghurt?
The same caution applies. A very small amount is unlikely to cause serious harm, but dairy generally isn't part of a gerbil's natural diet and isn't worth making a regular treat.
What treats are actually good for gerbils?
Seed mixes formulated for gerbils, along with occasional small pieces of gerbil-safe vegetables, suit their natural diet far better than processed or dairy foods, and are worth rotating for variety.
My gerbil stole a piece of cheese, is that an emergency?
Not usually, with a small piece. Keep an eye on their droppings and activity over the following day, and contact your vet if they seem unwell, stop eating, or the upset doesn't settle.
