A gerbil in the wild forages through seed heads and roots rather than eating a uniform pellet, and a mixed muesli-style food gives a caged gerbil something closer to that variety, provided the mix is actually balanced rather than just varied.

The recipe opens with soya bean meal and extruded wheat, and includes flaked maize, whole oats, whole maize, flaked peas, alfalfa meal, pumpkin seeds, dried carrot flakes and linseed among others. Supreme's own guide is 5-10g a day for an average adult gerbil, alongside fresh water at all times.

• Protein 17%, crude fibre 4%, fat content 8%
• Inorganic matter 5%, calcium 0.8%, phosphorus 0.6%
• Contains wheat, oats and maize — not a grain-free mix
• Feeding guide: 5-10g per gerbil per day
• May contain genetically modified soya and traces of nuts

On grain content. This is not a grain-free mix — wheat, oats and maize all appear in the ingredient list — so if that's something you're specifically avoiding, check the composition against your gerbil's current diet before switching.

Who it's for: gerbil owners after a proper muesli-style mix with genuine ingredient variety, rather than a single uniform pellet.
