A hamster or gerbil left with a bowl of identical pellets will still forage for variety if it can find any, which is the whole reason a mixed diet tends to get eaten more thoroughly than a uniform one. Mr Johnson's Supreme mix leans into that with a genuinely varied ingredient list rather than a single pellet shape.

The composition includes concentrate nuts, kibbled and flaked maize, flaked peas and beans, whole wheat, sunflower seeds, dried carrot, and - worth flagging directly - dried banana, peanuts and mealworms, plus a Verm-X herb blend included for digestive health. Protein comes out at 18%, crude fibre at 4.5%, crude oils and fats at 5.5% and crude ash at 3%. It is a complementary feed, meant to be fed alongside fresh fruit and vegetables rather than as the whole diet.

• Wide ingredient mix: nuts, seeds, dried fruit, peanuts and mealworms

• Includes a Verm-X herb blend
• Complementary feed - not a complete diet alone
• Contains added colourants
• 900g or 15kg bag

On what's in it. This mix contains peanuts and mealworms as named ingredients, which is worth knowing if you are feeding more than one small animal from the same bag or are cautious about nut content generally - there is no allergen-free alternative flagged on this card, only this recipe.

Who it's for: owners of hamsters or gerbils who want a varied mix that encourages foraging, fed as part of a diet that also includes fresh fruit and vegetables rather than on its own.
