Which treat are you actually after?

Treats are food, and the 10% rule is the only one worth memorising
The usual veterinary guidance is that treats should make up no more than about a tenth of a dog’s daily calories, with the rest coming from a complete food. That sounds generous until you count: a couple of dental sticks, a chew and a handful of training treats will clear it comfortably in a medium dog, and none of it feels like a meal at the time.
The practical fix is not to give fewer treats but to take the difference off dinner. A dog being trained hard on a Saturday should get a smaller bowl that evening. Weighing the food rather than scooping it is what makes that possible, and it is the single change that does most for a dog carrying extra weight.
Read the first three ingredients and ignore the front of the pack
Composition is listed in descending order by weight, so the first three ingredients are most of what is in the treat. A treat whose list opens with a named meat is a meat treat. One that opens with cereals and sugar is a biscuit with flavouring, which is fine at one a day and is not what the picture on the front implied.
Percentages in brackets are the honest part of the label. "With chicken" can mean four percent chicken; "chicken (57%)" means what it says. Where a brand publishes the figure we put it on the product page, and where they do not publish one we say so rather than guessing.

Common questions
How many treats a day is too many?
The common guidance is around 10% of daily calories from treats and the rest from a complete food. If you are training a lot on a given day, take the difference off the dog’s meal rather than adding it on top.
What is the best treat for training?
Small, soft and quickly eaten. You want to deliver many rewards in a short session, so anything the dog has to stop and chew interrupts the training rather than reinforcing it.
Do dental chews actually work?
They help on the tooth surfaces the chewing action reaches, which is not all of them. They are a useful daily habit alongside brushing, not a replacement for it or for a vet’s dental check.
Are rawhide chews safe?
They are heavily debated. The risks people raise are swallowed chunks and hard pieces cracking teeth. Whatever you give, match it to the dog’s chewing strength and take it away once it is small enough to swallow whole.
Can puppies have these?
Many treats carry a minimum age on the pack, and hard chews are a poor idea while adult teeth are coming through. Check the individual product page, where we quote the pack’s own guidance.
My dog is overweight. What should I use?
Use part of their normal daily kibble as training rewards. It costs nothing, it is already accounted for in their intake, and most dogs work for it perfectly happily.
