Hydrolysed protein dog food uses protein that has been broken down into much smaller pieces than usual, specifically so a dog's immune system is less likely to recognise and react to it. What “hydrolysed” actually means

What to know before buying it
Hydrolysed recipes are generally priced higher than standard food, reflecting the processing involved, and not every dog needs this level of intervention — many digestive or skin issues resolve with a simpler single-protein or limited-ingredient change first.
If your dog has not already been through an assessment for a suspected allergy, it is worth speaking to a vet before starting on a hydrolysed food specifically, since the value of it comes from being used as part of a proper process rather than as a general-purpose sensitive-stomach food.
Reading the label
Look for the word 'hydrolysed' or 'hydrolyzed' directly against the protein source on the ingredients list — for example hydrolysed chicken liver or hydrolysed soy protein — rather than assuming any limited-ingredient recipe uses the same process.
Complete hydrolysed foods are formulated to meet a dog's full nutritional needs, so they can be fed as the sole diet rather than only alongside other food, in the same way any other complete recipe would be.
