Yak Snack dog chews
Yak Snack is a hardened cheese chew, made from a dried, compressed cheese rather than meat or animal hide, and marketed on how long a dog can work at one compared with a softer treat. We stock the plain version alongside peanut butter and strawberry variants.

What makes it different from a rawhide or meat chew
Because it is a hardened dairy product rather than meat or hide, it tends to be very slow-going for most dogs, which is exactly the appeal for an owner looking for something that lasts well beyond a normal chew session. It is also generally low odour compared with some meat-based chews.
As the chew wears down to a smaller, softer piece, some owners microwave the remaining nub briefly to puff it up into a light, crunchy treat rather than throwing it away, though this should only be done with the small leftover piece and watched closely rather than a full-size chew.
Choosing between the flavours, and using it safely
The peanut butter and strawberry versions are flavoured coatings on the same base chew, aimed at dogs who need a bit more encouragement to get started, while the plain version suits dogs who are happy to chew regardless. All are very hard and long-lasting rather than a quick treat.
Because of how dense and hard it is, it is not the right chew for a dog with weak or damaged teeth, and any hard chew carries some risk of a cracked tooth in a very forceful chewer. Supervise your dog with it and take away any piece small enough to swallow whole.

Common questions
- What is Yak Snack made from?
- It is a hardened, dried cheese chew rather than a meat or hide product. That gives it a very long-lasting, dense texture compared with most other dog chews.
- Can I microwave a Yak Snack chew?
- Only the small leftover piece once your dog has worn the chew down — briefly microwaving it can puff it up into a light, crunchy treat. Never microwave a full-size chew, and watch it closely while heating and cooling.
- Is Yak Snack suitable for dogs with dental problems?
- It is a very hard chew, so it is not a good choice for a dog with weak, damaged or sensitive teeth. If your dog has had dental issues, ask your vet what type of chew is appropriate before offering a hard one like this.
- How long does a Yak Snack chew last?
- It varies by dog, but because it is so dense, most dogs take considerably longer to work through one than a typical rawhide or edible chew. Strong chewers will still get through it faster than gentle chewers of the same size.
- Are peanut butter and strawberry flavour chews safe for dogs?
- Yes, the peanut butter and strawberry versions are flavoured coatings made specifically for the dog chew rather than a human food product added on, so they are formulated with dogs in mind rather than borrowed from a jar in the kitchen cupboard.
