Yakers dog chews
Yakers make a hard, dried cheese chew for dogs, produced from yak and cow milk rather than rawhide or a manufactured chew base. We stock the original chew in several sizes and flavours, plus the brand's smaller Crunchy Bites and Crunchy Bars for dogs who don't need a chew that lasts for weeks.
You might also want to browse tough toys for strong chewers, antler and root chews and dog puzzle toys.
What a Yakers chew actually is
A Yakers chew is made from a small number of ingredients — yak and cow milk, salt and a little lime juice — pressed and dried into a hard block rather than manufactured from hide off-cuts the way a lot of chews on the market are. That makes it a genuinely different product from a rawhide stick, both in what it's made from and in how long it lasts: a dog with a determined chew can still be working on the same piece days later.
It's also a low-odour, low-fat chew, which is one reason it turns up as a rawhide alternative for owners who've had enough of the smell or the mess. Once a dog has worn a chew down to a small enough piece to be a choking risk, it's meant to be softened in the microwave into a puffed, crunchy treat rather than thrown away — worth knowing before you bin the stub.
The range we stock, and who it suits
We carry the original Yakers Dog Chew in several sizes, up to Extra Large for bigger, more determined chewers, plus flavoured versions — apple, mint, blueberry, cranberry, strawberry and peanut butter & banana — for dogs who take some persuading with a plain one. If your dog has torn through every rawhide stick you've tried, this is the more durable alternative to reach for next.
For dogs who can't manage a full hard chew — small breeds, older dogs, or puppies not yet onto adult treats — the range also includes Crunchy Bites and Crunchy Bars, which give the same cheese flavour in a treat sized for eating rather than gnawing. Introduce any new chew gradually and always supervise a dog with something this hard, the same as you would with any long-lasting chew.
Chews and choking risk — the general rule
Any long-lasting chew, Yakers included, should be sized to the dog eating it and watched rather than left in a crate unsupervised. A piece that has worn down small enough to fit fully in the mouth is a choking risk regardless of the brand, and that is the point at which it should be taken away or, with a hard cheese chew like this, softened into the crunchy treat it is designed to become.
If you are moving a dog off rawhide for the first time, introduce the new chew the way you would any other — a short supervised session first, rather than handing it over and leaving the room. Dogs vary hugely in how hard they chew, and the right size and hardness for one dog is not automatically right for the next.

Common questions
- What are Yakers dog chews made from?
- They're made from yak and cow milk, pressed and dried into a hard block with a little salt and lime juice added. There's no rawhide or hide by-product in them, which is one of the main reasons owners move across to this type of chew.
- Are Yakers chews safe for puppies or small dogs?
- The chew itself isn't unsafe, but a full-size hard chew is genuinely too much for a small mouth or a young puppy to manage safely. The Crunchy Bites and Crunchy Bars give the same flavour in a treat sized for eating, which is the better starting point for a smaller or younger dog.
- How long does a Yakers chew actually last?
- It depends entirely on the dog — a determined chewer can work through one in a single sitting, while a more relaxed chewer can make the same chew last for weeks. It is genuinely one of the longer-lasting options compared with a standard rawhide stick, which is the main reason it's popular.
- What should I do once the chew has worn down to a small piece?
- Take it away once it's small enough to be swallowed whole or to pose a choking risk, the same as with any hard chew. Yakers chews are designed to be softened in the microwave at that point, turning the leftover stub into a puffed, crunchy treat rather than something to throw away.
