Super-premium dry dog food
"Super-premium" isn't a legal term, but in practice it describes dry dog foods built around a higher proportion of named meat and fewer fillers than an everyday complete food. It's the top shelf of our dry food range rather than a separate aisle, and it costs more for a reason worth understanding before you switch.
You might also want to browse kibble for dogs, slow feeder bowls and licking mats.
What sets this end of the shelf apart
Brands like Aatu build recipes around a stated meat percentage, such as their 80/20 range, meaning 80% named meat and fish against 20% other ingredients — a much higher ratio than a typical everyday kibble. Barking Heads and Arden Grange's premium lines sit in a similar space, leaning on named proteins and shorter ingredient lists rather than generic meat meal and bulk cereals.
None of that automatically makes a food right for every dog — a higher meat content also usually means a richer food, which some dogs' stomachs handle better gradually introduced than swapped overnight. It's a genuine step up in ingredient quality for owners who want it, not a claim that everyday food is doing anything wrong.
How to choose one
Start with your dog's current food and read both labels side by side rather than the marketing — compare the named meat percentage, the order ingredients are listed in, and whether the recipe suits your dog's life stage and any known sensitivities. A working or very active dog may do well on a higher-protein recipe that would be too rich for a sedentary older dog.
Introduce any premium food gradually over a week or so, mixing it with the current food in increasing amounts, and watch your dog's stools and appetite as you go. If a switch doesn't settle within a few days, or your dog seems unwell, that's worth a call to your vet rather than persisting through it.

Common questions
- Is super-premium dog food worth the extra cost?
- It depends what you're looking for — a higher named-meat content and shorter ingredient list is a genuine quality difference for owners who want it, but it isn't a guarantee that a dog will do better on it than a well-formulated everyday food. Many dogs thrive on either; it comes down to your dog and your priorities.
- Can I switch straight to a super-premium food overnight?
- It's better not to. A sudden change, especially to a richer, higher-meat recipe, can upset a dog's stomach. Introduce it gradually over about a week, mixing increasing amounts with the current food, and watch how your dog gets on.
- Does a higher meat percentage mean more protein?
- Usually, yes, though the exact protein percentage is listed separately in the analytical constituents on the pack rather than being the same figure as the meat content. Check both if protein level matters for your dog's age, activity or any condition your vet has advised on.
