Wet dog food in carton packs
Some wet dog food is sold in a carton rather than a tin or foil pouch — a resealable, block-shaped pack that stacks flatter in a cupboard and, unlike a tin, doesn't need a tin opener or leave a sharp lid behind. The food inside works the same as any other wet food; the carton is a packaging choice, not a different recipe.
You might also want to browse wet food for dogs, slow feeder dog bowls and enrichment lick mats.
Why some brands use a carton
Cartons are lighter and more compact to store than the equivalent tin, and a resealable one lets you use part of the pack and keep the rest in the fridge without decanting it into another container first. For anyone feeding a smaller dog who doesn't get through a full tin in one sitting, that's a genuine practical advantage over a can.
The carton format also tends to be quieter to open and close than a tin, and there's no sharp edge to deal with once it's empty, which matters if you're doing it one-handed while holding a bowl.
Storing and serving it
Once opened, treat a carton the same way you would an opened tin — refrigerate the unused portion, use it within the timeframe on the pack, and let it come back closer to room temperature before serving if your dog is fussy about cold food straight from the fridge.
Check the feeding guide on the carton rather than assuming portions match a tin of similar size, since pack sizes and densities can differ between formats even within the same range.

Common questions
- Is carton-packed wet food the same quality as tinned food?
- The carton is a packaging decision rather than an indicator of quality — recipes are formulated the same way whether they end up in a tin, a pouch or a carton, so compare the actual ingredients and nutritional information rather than judging by the pack type alone.
- Can I recycle wet food cartons?
- Many cartons are recyclable, but check the specific packaging and your local council's guidance, since carton recycling schemes vary more by area than tin recycling does. Rinsing out any residue before recycling is generally good practice regardless.
- How long does an opened carton last in the fridge?
- Follow the guidance printed on the specific pack, since this varies between products, but as a general rule treat an opened carton the same way you would an opened tin — refrigerated and used within a few days rather than left indefinitely.
