Rice-free dog food
Rice-free dog food is exactly what it says: a complete diet that leaves rice out of the recipe entirely, usually replacing it with a different carbohydrate such as potato, oats, peas or sweet potato. It is not the same thing as grain-free — a food can be rice-free and still contain other grains like oats or barley — so the label wording matters more here than it might first look.

Why owners look for rice-free specifically
The most common reason is a suspected sensitivity to rice itself, usually spotted because a dog's digestion or skin improved after switching away from a rice-based food, or worsened after switching to one. True rice intolerance is not especially common in dogs, but individual dogs can react to almost any single ingredient, and rice is a very widely used carbohydrate, which is why it comes up.
Some owners also choose rice-free food as part of a broader elimination approach when trying to identify what a dog is reacting to, working through ingredients one at a time under veterinary guidance. In that context, rice-free is one tool among several rather than a diagnosis on its own — cutting out rice will only help if rice was genuinely the problem.
How to actually check a label
Read the full ingredient list rather than trusting a 'rice-free' claim on the front of the bag at face value, since rice can appear in less obvious forms — rice bran, rice protein, or broken rice used as a filler — that do not always jump out. The ingredients are listed by weight, so anything near the top of the list is doing more of the nutritional work than something near the bottom.
Bear in mind that rice-free does not mean grain-free or low-carbohydrate. A rice-free food built around oats or wheat still contains grain, and one built around potato or sweet potato is still carrying a similar level of carbohydrate to a rice-based recipe — it has simply swapped which plant it comes from.
What we stock
Our dry and wet dog food range includes recipes built around potato, oats, peas and other carbohydrates instead of rice, across several of the brands we carry, alongside genuinely grain-free options for owners looking to avoid grain altogether rather than just rice specifically.
If you are switching because of a suspected sensitivity, change the food gradually over a week to ten days and keep a simple note of how your dog's coat, energy and stools respond, since that is the evidence that actually tells you whether rice was the issue.

Common questions
- Is rice-free the same as grain-free?
- No. Grain-free excludes all cereal grains, including rice, wheat, oats and barley. Rice-free food has removed rice specifically but can still contain other grains, so check the full ingredient list if you are avoiding grain generally rather than just rice.
- Why would a dog need a rice-free diet?
- Usually because rice appears to trigger digestive upset or skin irritation in that particular dog, spotted through diet changes rather than a formal test. It is not a diet every dog needs — most dogs digest rice perfectly well as part of a balanced complete food.
- What replaces rice in a rice-free dog food?
- Common substitutes include potato, sweet potato, oats, peas and other pulses, each providing a similar carbohydrate and energy role in the recipe. None of these is automatically 'better' than rice — it depends on what suits your individual dog.
- Can puppies eat rice-free food?
- Yes, provided the food is labelled complete and suitable for puppies, since the rice-free part relates to the carbohydrate source rather than whether the overall recipe meets a growing puppy's nutritional needs.
