Reptile heat mats
A heat mat is a thin, flat heating element fixed to the side or underneath a vivarium to provide steady background warmth, usually as one part of a wider heating setup that also includes a basking lamp for species that need one. It works by gentle, constant warmth rather than a bright heat source, which makes it particularly suited to nocturnal species and to maintaining a warm hide overnight.
What a heat mat actually does
Unlike a heat lamp, a heat mat produces no light, which makes it useful for maintaining warmth through the night without disturbing a reptile's normal day-night cycle. It is typically placed on one side of the enclosure to create a temperature gradient, so the animal can move toward or away from the heat as it needs to.
Most setups use a mat to warm a hide or one section of the floor space rather than the whole enclosure, because reptiles regulate their own body temperature by moving between warmer and cooler areas. A mat covering the entire floor removes that choice, which is why sizing and placement matter as much as the mat itself.
Choosing and positioning one
A mat is generally sized to cover somewhere around a third of the enclosure floor, leaving the rest as a cooler area. Going larger than that risks removing the temperature gradient the animal relies on to thermoregulate.
Placement depends on the setup: some are fixed under a glass or wooden floor from outside the enclosure, others sit inside under a substrate layer thin enough not to insulate the heat away. Check what the specific mat and vivarium are designed for before fitting one, since not every enclosure material is suited to an internally or externally mounted mat in the same way.
A mat should always be run through a thermostat rather than plugged in directly, since without one there is no way to keep the temperature within a safe range for the animal or to prevent the mat overheating.
Safety basics
Never let substrate, bedding, or décor sit directly against a mat in a way that traps heat with nowhere to dissipate, and check the mat and surrounding area periodically for warping, discolouration or a smell, which can indicate a fault.
A functioning thermostat with a probe positioned at animal level, rather than just at the mat surface, is the single most important piece of equipment in a heat mat setup — it is what actually keeps the temperature the animal experiences within a safe range, rather than the mat's own built-in settings, which vary and are not a substitute for one.

Common questions
- Do I need a thermostat with a heat mat?
- Yes, always. A heat mat run without a thermostat has no way of maintaining a safe, stable temperature and can overheat, which is a genuine risk both to the animal and as a fire hazard. A thermostat with a probe at animal level is standard practice, not an optional extra.
- Where should a heat mat be placed in a vivarium?
- Usually at one end or side, covering roughly a third of the floor space, so the animal can move toward or away from the heat as needed. Covering the whole floor removes that choice and the temperature gradient reptiles rely on to regulate their body temperature.
- Can a heat mat replace a basking lamp?
- Not for species that need one. A heat mat provides background warmth without light, while many reptiles also need a bright basking spot and, for many species, UVB lighting. Check what your particular species requires rather than assuming one heat source covers everything.
- How do I know if a heat mat is working properly?
- Monitor the actual temperature in the enclosure with a separate thermometer at animal level rather than relying on the mat feeling warm to the touch. If the reading drifts outside the safe range for your species, or the mat shows any warping or discolouration, stop using it and check the thermostat and wiring.
